Hi all,

This Friday 16th April at the clubrooms is the Trophy and Award presentations starting at 6:30pm sharp in the Don Morrison Room (upstairs main hall for those newer members). Finger food will be served throughout the evening. If you’ve been consistent in club points races, won a trophy swim, gained a surf education award or performed at the Club Championships, come on down and congratulate those who will be recognised during this past season.

Following this will be the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club’s Annual Dinner on Saturday 8th May at 6:30pm, again in the Don Morrison Room. The dress code for the evening will be Formal – Black Tie and the cost will be $60 which includes a fantastic three-course meal and drinks. Join us on this evening to help celebrate those meritorious achievements of our members and reflect on what was a great season in our Centenary year. Please contact the office on 9383 4400 to arrange payment of tickets and to put in your requests for seating arrangements. (RSVP by Wednesday May 5th)

What did you think of the past season, our 100th year, at the club? We would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions as we wind down after the end of a busy season. We would also like to hear if you are able to help out the club in any way, shape or manner. Interested in working behind the bar? Simon Lalor, our Bar Manager, would love to hear from you. Haven’t got your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification? Let us know and we will organise to get a course going. Thinking about competing next season but don’t know where to start? Get in touch with us. We will guide you in the right direction for who to speak to and where to go for training sessions. The gym is lively on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and there are various fitness sessions that are being discussed for other times.

The coffee shop is open from 6:45am on the above three mornings as well as Saturday mornings. It is coordinated by Owen Ashby and there are various jovial baristas that are there ready to serve up the perfect coffee. Well … you do get the occasional nuclear surprise but who’s complaining! Friday nights at the bar will continue. Come on down and bring your friends! IRB Courses will be starting in May, details coming soon. There’s plenty happening around the club during the off season. Be sure to inform us as to what you’d like to do or be a part of during the off season or even planning for next season and we’ll see what can be done.

I’ll see you at the club.

Last Sunday we had the qualifying carnival for the Junior State Championships at Trigg Island. The conditions were rough and all the kids did the Club proud. Participation, having a go and doing your best is what it is all about. It was great to see all the Cott competitors displaying good sportsmanship and a sense of fair play. Whilst it is great when we win, and those that qualified certainly deserve all our applause, having a go and playing fairly is just as important. Well done to all the competitors.

Trigg Island Surf Lifesaving Club held a great carnival . They were very organised and made us very welcome at their beach. Well done Trigg!

A few of our competitors received injuries on the day but between the volunteer water safety and first aid personnel everyone was quickly attended to and there was genuine concern from both Cott members and other clubs as to the well being of our young members. I am happy to let you know that all our injured competitors are now ok.

A big thanks to all the Cott members who helped out as officials and with first aid and water safety.

Don’t forget there are many events that you don’t have to qualify for at the Junior State Championships. It is not too late to enter, just talk with your Age Group Manager. If you haven’t been to a carnival before it may be that you might just want to try one or two beach events to start with. I would encourage all juniors to have a go.

Below are the results from Trigg:

Under 11’s
Trigg Island dished up some big surf for our youngest competitors (remember some of these kids are still only 10!). The qualifiers are:

Board rescue
Boys
Dion Brown – Oliver Line
Ryan Barrett – Robert Line
Alex Cain – Owen Quiskamp

Owen Quiskamp

Sprints
Owen Quiskamp

Under 12s
Our Under 12s as a group showed a great team spirit. Well done Under 12s.

Board Rescue
Kalani Bennell and Sofia Chaves

Board Race
Kate Martin

Beach Sprint
Ethan Williams

Under 13s
Iwould like to acknowledge Sara Johnson and Deb Fisher who battled hard all day in tough conditions with a never give up attitude. Well done girls! The qualifiers are:

Sprints
Patrick Skipworth

Board rescue
Boys
Connor Brown/Lachie Price

Girls
Aosie Noone/Sophie Foster
Lucy Rose/Holly Richmond

Connor Brown
Lachie Price – reserve (Lachie was extremely unlucky not to go through as he was the last one eliminated)

Under 14s
A great attitude and some real leadership shown by our recent SRC graduates. Adele, Andy, Sarah and Claudia provided encouragement all day to their team mates. In the water there was a huge effort from Georgina Hill, Brielle, Ellen, Jenna, Jack Lewins and Connor Ryman. Well done. Our Under 14 qualifiers are:

Board Rescue
Girls
Simona Vitelli and Sabrina Quickstamp qualified

G’day Everyone,

This weekend will see just under 100 Cottesloe Competitors (yes, that includes the illustrious March Past) compete at the State Championships being held at Secret Harbour. Those not competing are encouraged to attend and support our club. Last night saw most of these competitors attend a players tea where some inspiration was offered by Michael Mackinnon, wonderful speech Mike! Everyone chipped in with an assortment of fantastic food and good vibes…

The WA State Masters Championships were held recently. Cottesloe members performed extremely well. To see these great results, please click here.

Good luck to everyone this weekend at the WA State Championships! One thing not to forget however, is our water safety and first aid commitments. If we do not provide sufficient people at our assigned times, the club risks being disqualified. If you are available to help this weekend, please check the below session times and let Chris Inglis in the office know as soon as possible.

Saturday 27th February
One IRB Crew or Driver for Session 1: 9:00am in the U/15 Arena.
One Bronze Medallion holder for Session 4: 2:00pm at the First Aid station.

Sunday 28th February
One IRB Crew or Driver for Session 1: 9:00am in the Women’s Arena.
One IRB Crew or Driver for Session 2: 11:00am in the Men’s Arena.
One Bronze Medallion holder for Session 3: 12:00noon at the First Aid station.
One IRB Crew or Driver for Session 3: 1:00pm in the U/15 Arena.

All IRB personnel need to report to Kingsley Smith, and the First Aid personnel need to report to Anne-Marie Widermanski. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the session commencing.

Further Junior Activities information including States information, Beach and Board Training and Season conclusion, click here.

This Saturday morning will see 16 candidates sit their Bronze Medallion exam. Good luck to those involved and we look forward to seeing some new faces on patrol! The next Bronze Medallion course, which will be the last for this 09-10 season, will commence Wednesday 10th March at 6:00pm. If you have any friends that have shown an interest in joining the club, get them to sign up now and take advantage of the half price membership offer. Don’t forget, this will also entitle you to a $50 club voucher once the new member completes their Bronze course!

This Friday night, wood fired pizza will be available from 5.30pm in the courtyard. It’s sure to be another amazing sunset and with this glorious weather, what better place than Cottesloe to enjoy an end of week beer – Bar open from 5pm.

On Sunday afternoon/evening/night, the club will have the After States Party! This is the Sunday Session, club priced drinks and DJ on offer. It would be great to see everyone there to offer congratulations to the Competitors and officials over the weekend. The long weekend is on Monday, there is no excuse! (except if your on Patrol).

Speaking of Patrols, this weekend are the following

            Saturday morning 9am – 1pm – Patrol 6 – Captain – Andy Elliott
Saturday afternoon 1pm – 5pm – Patrol 16 – Captain – Chris Payne
Sunday morning 9am – 1pm – Patrol 3 – Captain – Peter Bryant
Sunday afternoon 1pm – 5pm – Patrol 9 – Captain – Corey Patterson
Monday morning 9am – 1pm – Patrol 14 – Captain – Katie Redbond
Monday afternoon 1pm – 5pm – Patrol 8 – Captain – Anthony Whelan

As it will be a blistering weekend, the discretions are open to Captains to extend their Patrols. Please be vigilant and mindful of your duties as Lifesavers at Cottesloe. Those competing this weekend best confirm your substitutes (equivalent award) if you haven’t already done so. Those rostered and not on Patrol will be pulled from the carnival.

The following weekend is the Junior State Championships being held at Trigg Beach, again, all are encouraged to support our Junior members where possible. Next Wednesday evening, Dean has organised a junior players tea. Keep a watchful eye for more information on this.

The Sculptures by the Sea are starting next week, that’s right they’re back and the upstairs portion of the club will generally be occupied by them so it would be appreciated if members respect the group from Sculptures and limit themselves to the club courtyard.

AFL Footy is just around the corner, please take an interest in the CSLSCFC – no need to enquire, just register an email interest to admin@cottsurf.com with the subject title being CSLSCFC. Full registration details will then be forwarded.

What we need from you is a commitment up front now of your $50 (full season) payment.

Complete details will be released shortly, but upon a minimum of 61 tipsters, the following will result.

$50 weekly winners bar tab
$1000 season winning first prize
$500 for second
$250 for third
$125 for fourth
$62 for fifth and a
$50 bar tab for last!!

The competition is internet based and if you want to hear more about the brilliance of the concept, speak with Cottesloe’s gaming guru, Martin Johnson next time you’re having a beer on a Friday night!

Friday 26th Wood fired Pizza at club

Board Sponsorship
At the start of the season we invited members to sponsor our junior boards. Thank you to all our generous board sponsors . This represents five new boards which the nippers would not have otherwise had.

Junior State Championships Shirt Presentation and BBQ 3rd March 5pm
If you are going to the Junior State Champs please diarise Wednesday 3rd March at 5pm to be at the club. There will be a BBQ (Hamburgers) for competitors and parents followed by a State Shirt presentation to participants at 6pm.

Junior State Championships Sunday Sausage Sizzle at the Club 3 March 5pm
After the last event on Sunday at the Junior State Championships there will be a Sausage Sizzle back at the club. Please come back to the club straight after the Trigg Island carnival. All are welcome.

Board and Beach Training
Everyone of all ages and abilities are welcome to all sessions, meet at the boat shed.

Juniors End of Season 21st March
The last day of the season is Sunday 21st March 2010. There will be no activities that day, instead we will be handing out certificates and having a party for the kids. Later in the morning the bar will be open. We want this to be a fun day for the kids and parents.

Juniors Sunday Morning Winter Training

Brendon Sarson – one of Cottesloe’s great champions and reigning WA Open Ironman opens up. For an insight into Brendon, please refer this link.

For those that haven’t heard, Cottesloe Beach was successful in its first attempt at obtaining the Havaiana Thong WORLD RECORD which was held on Australia Day. For more information, please refer this link.

Someone has made mention of a Bikini World record attempt to be made in April at the Bell Tower, The club will be actively pursuing this event to be staged at Cottesloe Beach, would be great to take another title away from Bondi!

Lastly, The AFL season is just about upon us. Cottesloe created a tipping comp last year that didn’t quite get off the ground, though we are keen to introduce it again this year. What we need from you is a commitment up front a couple weeks out from the season start of your $50 (full season) payment.

See you around the club.

Cheers,

Richard Olson
President

The entire coast was lashed with severe weather over the weekend, with racing delayed and eventually shifted to a nearby beach at Bulli.

Cottesloe ‘Des & Troy’ (Josh Wilkes, Dave Castles, Dave Goyder, Lukas Sibma and Jeff Burling) took out 4th in the Reserves final and 6th in the U23 final. This was a huge effort from the guys, at one point racing in three out of five consecutive races. The guys will be definite contenders at Aussies this year.

‘The Juice’ (Rhett Nicholas, Tom Schroeter, Luke Brunner, Scott Silverthorne and Mike Cameron) were unlucky to end up 5th in the Under 19 final, on debut. There was literally inches between 2nd and 5th, but that’s surf boat rowing. Thanks to the generous support of the Pylon Club (Adam and Leesa Plester) for sending these guys east for the weekend.

Several crews made it through to semis, including the ‘Chargers’ (Steve L’Huillier, Robbie Alexander, Eamon Murphy, Shane Rho and Jeff Burling) in the Open Men and the ‘Indiana’ (Nat Whiteside, Bec Smith, Meg Chute, Ange Coote and Jeff Burling) in both the Open Womens and Under 23 womens. Both the ‘Chargers’ and the ‘Indiana’ progressed furthest of any West Australian crew in their divisions.

‘The Shimmer’ (Maia Simmonds, Denise Dagley, Steph Dodd, Sophie Madden-Scott and Mike Cameron), the ‘Challengers’ (Stuart Mackinnon, Pete Cameron, James Bairstow, Kris Longmore and Mike Cameron) and ‘Spicy’ (Steph Webb, Katie Redbond, Steph Coote, Deniqua Boston and Mike Cameron) all rowed well in testing conditions.

Cuts were very harsh between rounds due to the limited time available: In addition to the cancellation of the Interstate Challenge, some crews even had to leave before their finals could be run! The ASRL copped some flak over a range of decisions, and changes are likely to be made for the 2011 event (also to be held at Wollongong).

Congratulations to all those that competed. The event provides a great lead up to Kurrawa. Special mention to Des & Troy, who were the only crew to make it into two finals over the weekend. Sensational effort lads!

Congratulations to all those swimmers who took part in the Cottesloe Classic Mile swim event held recently at Cottesloe beach. This marks the 26th year of running this event and saw the introduction of a new Quarter Mile event which although had small numbers participating, it was good to have a shorter distance for competitors. The ocean was calm with temperatures in the low 30’s which made for great day in the water and competitors all seemed to be getting very good times.

There was a good turnout this year with a total of 439 swimmers entering the event. The top prize of $250 for the first woman and first man were won by Melissa Benson and Travis Nederpelt. Cash prizes were also won by the second and third overall fastest competitors and the winners of eight different age groups also collected a prize. The Quarter Mile winners were Stephanie Boehm and Ian Douglas, both finishing in very good times. Ken McKenzie took out the Pat Dwyer perpetual trophy for the fastest swimmer aged 70+ ….. well done Ken.

Our thanks go to all the great helpers on the day without which there would be no event, our surf life savers especially get a vote of thanks for keeping swimmers safe. Our sponsors ‘Old Bridge Cellars, ‘Mainpeak of Cottesloe’ and ‘Marbret International’ for their sponsorship support each assisted in making the day a big success.

Photos of the event will follow shortly.

Our next big event is the inaugural Cottesloe Ocean Adventure which is scheduled for 13th February 2010.

Keep your eyes peeled for next years Cottesloe Classic Mile event scheduled for Saturday 8th January 2011…. It will only get bigger and better.
