State and National
The 2009/2010 calendar is packed full of events. Click here to view the calendar below.
State competition concludes with the State Titles, to be held on 27 and 28 February 2010 at Secret Harbour. This is a highly prestigious and tightly contested event. Last year, almost 100 members represented the club across beach, water, craft (board and ski) and boat arenas. This year is going to be even bigger. Sunday night after States is one of THE nights to come down to the club and share the highs and lows of the day’s competitive performances.
State Titles are also contested earlier in the year. In June/July, both the State Board Riding and State IRB Championships are typically held to take advantage of the winter surf.
Of special interest is the Sunset Sprints. Cottesloe SLSC will host the annual Sunset Sprints on the 18th of December 2009. The short carnival starts at twilight and our club balcony makes for spectacular viewing of this event. A Christmas Party will follow up at the clubhouse with all members welcome to attend this gala evening. Mark Friday 18th December in your dairies for a great evening!
Throughout the year, a range of national events are held. Although these events are open to all members (there are no qualifying events as such), Cottesloe has traditionally had several State representatives selected each year to race in additional special events.
The ASRL Open is a major event for surf rowers in Australia and has steadily grown in size and stature since its inception in 1997. 2010 is anticipated to be the biggest and best ever with an expected 1500+ boaties from throughout the nation converging on Wollongong, NSW for the event. It is held over the weekend of the 5th, 6th & 7th February 2010, including an interstate competition on the Friday night.
The central event on the national calendar is the Australian Titles. This year the event returns to Kurrawa (on the Gold Coast) after a three-year stint in Western Australia. This will be a huge event. The annual Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are one of the world’s largest and most exciting sporting events, with almost 7,000 competitors from Australia and international lifesaving countries participating each year. For more information, see www.aussies.com.au. Cottesloe will be sending a large contingent to the Australian Titles this season, under the guidance of John Lishman as the Touring Team Manager. The club traditionally books out the entire Old Burleigh Courts premises to house competitors and supporters only metres from the beach front. Space will be limited, so contact John early to express your interest.
Rescue 2010 is the international lifesaving championships. It will be held in Alexandria, Egypt, in October 2010. Stan Davies and John Lishman have already expressed their interest in attending. More information can be found at www.rescue2010.com

Before competing in any State or National Competition, senior competitors need to ensure that they are financial and have completed the required number of patrol hours to be able to compete in State Championships. Active members are required to complete 16 hours of rostered patrol time in the current season (penalty patrol hours do not count towards competition pre-requisites in accordance with SLSA rules).
